Southside Espresso

22 Nov

Tucked behind one of Houston’s most prominent restaurants is an endearing and quaint local coffee shop called Southside Espresso. If you don’t look hard enough, you just might miss it. After finding Southside last week and giving it a try, I highly recommend you hunt it down as well. The coffee experts at Southside are concocting some of the best drinks in Houston.

Southside is the perfect spot for coffee dates, late-night work marathons and post-dinner drinks. Open daily from 7 am to midnight, this coffee shop and bar is casual and quiet, providing visitors a creative atmosphere for any occasion. Southside was the perfect meeting spot for my coffee date last week, and I returned again yesterday to write this post and enjoy a glass of red wine.

I noticed several things the first time I walked through the door…

1)      The beer taps behind the counter. Southside serves beer and wine until midnight. They have a great selection of alcoholic beverages for anyone who needs to wind down.

2)      A friendly face behind the counter. The lady who helped us was eager to get us exactly what we wanted. She recommended the perfect drinks and made them flawlessly. The rest of the café radiates a friendly atmosphere as well. It is cool and comfortable. During our visit I had the opportunity to meet yet another friendly coffee-lover, owner Sean Marshall. He’s a welcoming fellow who has brought something really special to Montrose.

3)      The bar. If sitting outside or at one of the two-person tables isn’t for you, take a seat at the bar. I made the bar my resting place when I visited Southside yesterday. Plus, sitting at the bar makes drinking alone more relaxing when there are friendly bartenders around to stir up conversation.

4)      The wall of loose leaf tea. Shelves of herb-filled mason jars boast Southside’s abundant and impressive tea selection. The bartender gave us a run-down of the tea options, including several seasonal hot teas. I smelled the jar of Orange Gingerbread and knew I had found my match. I received my hot tea with a teapot and enjoyed more refills than I needed. I recommend Southside’s tea to everyone!

5)      The glass case of baked goods. Southside is a distributor of Clean Sweets baked goods. Clean Sweets makes handmade goodies for all diets. The treats are gluten-free, vegetarian, dairy-free, and may I add, delicious. Southside serves both paleo and vegan desserts. The paleo cookies were excellent additions to our warm drinks.

6)      Sweet potatoes baking in the oven. I would bet money that Southside is the only coffee shop in town baking sweet potatoes behind the counter to make homemade syrup for their Sweet Potato Lattes. This seasonal latte will have you really giving thanks! The baked sweet potatoes filled the room with the wonderful aroma of fall and made our escape from the cold weather even more enjoyable. Southside makes all of its syrups in-house and serves the best lattes in town. My friend would tell you her almond and cardamom latte was easily the best she’s ever had.

Other noteworthy facts about Southside: they offer almond, coconut and soy milk, customers have access to free wifi, the shop is located directly behind Uchi, and you can park in the Uchi valet lot (just let them know you are a Southside customer).

Needless to say, my experiences at Southside have been awesome. I plan to continue my new favorite tradition of hopping over to Southside every week to try something different. I’ll see you there!
